Mika’s Car Crash Breaks A Grey’s Anatomy Exit Trend For The Worse

Warning! SPOILERS about Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 6 ahead.

The last moments of Grey's Anatomy season 21, episode 6 offered an insight into Mika’s potential exit story, highlighting a sad trend it might start. Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 6 set up the season’s major exits by focusing on Levi and Mika’s storylines, after the return of their actors Jake Borelli and Midori Francis to conclude the characters’ storylines was announced ahead of Grey’s Anatomy season 21. However, while Levi’s exit story seemingly sets him up for a journey making all his dreams come true in the future, Mika’s seems to be going down a darker and life-threatening path.

Throughout its course, plenty of Grey’s Anatomy interns and residents didn’t manage to finish the residency program at Grey Sloan Memorial or at all. The reasons that brought them not to complete their residency were multiple, going from the saddest like dying, a fate befalling various interns including George O’Malley in Grey’s Anatomy season 5, to the least dangerous, like being fired after a mistake or leaving after the residency program was shut down. However, Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 6’s ending hints at a different fate for Mika, one worse than any exit storyline previously seen on Grey’s Anatomy.

Mika Falling Asleep At The Wheel With Chloe In The Car Makes Her Responsible

Were Chloe To Die From This & Not Cancer Would Crush Mika

Midori Francis as Mika Yasuda in Grey's Anatomy season 21 episode 6

Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 6 marked a surprisingly happy shift for Mika, who could not only save a life cleverly but also attend surgery after days of not being able to feel useful at work. This happened at a busy and generally sad time, given how Mika was taking care of her sister Chloe appearing in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 following her cancer diagnosis. However, trying to keep up with everything going on in Mika’s life evidently took its toll, as Mika could be seen falling asleep at the wheel right before the end of season 21, episode 6.

Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis previously revealed how both exits in season 21 would keep the options open for the characters to return, making Mika’s death highly unlikely – unless her return were to happen as Lexi, Derek and George’s did in Grey’s Anatomy season 17. Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 7’s promo hinted at how serious the injuries of both Mika and Chloe are. Putting them both in danger makes the probability of only one of them surviving even higher, and Chloe dying in the car crash caused by Mika’s exhaustion puts an unbelievably painful kind of responsibility on Mika.

Chloe’s health already hung in the balance as she was introduced to Grey’s Anatomy season 21 with a serious illness. However, dying from cancer after Mika successfully had her fertility preserved would make Mika certain she did everything she could to save her sister. Instead, were Chloe to die because of an accident after Mika didn’t rest at the hospital when she should have would crush Mika. The death itself and the guilt derailing her career and life would make sense as Mika’s exit storyline in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, but it’d be the saddest possible exit storyline for Mika.

Various residents left Grey Sloan following horrifying events. Charles and Reed were killed during season 6’s mass shooting, George sacrificed himself for a stranger, Mousey was electrocuted as she looked for Richard and Stephanie left the hospital life behind after the explosion and ordeal with the patient who threatened her. However, all these horrible events were not the interns’ fault. Mika being the one driving and falling asleep at the wheel will inevitably make her feel guilty, whichever fate is in store for Chloe in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, but even more if Chloe were to die as a result.
