Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew says firing from show was “mean and unjust”

Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew has suggested that her firing from the show was “mean and unjust”.

The star exited the show as Dr April Kepner in 2018 but has made a few guest appearances since. Around the time of her exit, Drew compared her firing to “attending your own funeral” in an interview with Vulture.

“But in a really beautiful way,” she added at the time. “I think that in being let go, the outcry of support from fans, from my cast, from my crew, was so extraordinary. I talk about it as being love bombed.

“It’s like when you’re let go before something ends and when it’s not your choice, people come up and tell you why they love you and how much they love you and what you meant to them.”

Now, Drew has elaborated on her comments in a new chat on the Call It What It Is podcast.

“What I was trying to describe was… [I] was unceremoniously let go in a way that felt mean and unjust, and, because of that, the outpouring of love was so enormous that it was like you were sitting there watching people say all the things they love about you.”

Digital Spy has reached out to ABC and Shondaland for comment.

Speaking further on the podcast, the actor also compared her initial run as a series regular with her guest appearances, admitting it's been more “freeing” since she left.

“I have no attachment to [the show] at all,” she admitted. “So there’s peace… when you’re on the show, you never know what’s gonna happen.

“You never know if they’re gonna lose interest in your storyline or if you piss off the wrong person then something’s gonna happen. You don’t know."

Drew continued: “When I’ve just popped back in to say hello, I have zero anxiety and I don’t need anything from anybody on that set anymore."

“They’re not responsible for my livelihood anymore. They’re not responsible for my success or my joy. It feels very, very freeing to pop back in. I’m like, ‘Hey! This is a fun spot to come visit.’”

The actor will next be seen in Hallmark+ series Mistletoe Murders, which is due to premiere later this month.
